This course is composed of four units. The first unit introduces the origins of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) and the formation of North Korean society. The second unit describes the DPRK’s society and identity by illustrating the political system as well as North Korean education and its unique monitoring structure. The third unit examines the North Korean literature, art and films in order to explore the DPRK’s culture. The fourth unit looks at the current issues in the DPRK, such as North Korean women, North Korean mobility, and issues of unification and social integration of the two Koreas.
본 강좌는 아래와 같이 네 개의 유닛으로 구성되어 있습니다.
1. 조선민주주의인민공화국(북한)의 기원과 북한 사회의 형성을 소개합니다.
2. 북한의 정치체제, 교육체제, 감시체제 등을 통해 북한 사회와 북한의 정체성을 설명합니다.
3. 북한의 문학, 예술작품, 영화를 통해 북한의 문화를 살펴봅니다.
4. 북한의 여성, 탈북자 문제, 그리고 남북한의 통일과 사회통합과 같은 북한 문제의 현안들을 살펴봅니다.
This class explores various aspects of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (i.e., North Korea), providing students with an introduction of the country’s society, education, art, and culture.
본 강좌를 통해 북한의 역사, 사회, 교육, 예술, 문화의 특성 등 다양한 측면을 탐구하여, 북한 문화에 대한 이해도를 증진시킬 수 있습니다.
Students should achieve a score of over 60 in total. Evaluations consist of quizzes (30%) and writing assignments (70%).
본 강좌의 이수증 발급기준은 60점 이상이며, 아래와 같은 과제를 통과하여야 합니다.

(PDFs of required readings not available online will be provided.)
'Reading North Korean Culture in a Global Era' is an in-depth course that is part of 'Reading North Korea in a Global Era', which deals broadly with North Korea's history, politics, economy, society, and culture. The course covers North Korea's society and culture in detail. It is recommended that students take 'Reading North Korea in a Global Era' along with this course in order to obtain a better understanding of the course content.
